Types of Solar Hot Water Systems
There are a few decisions you need to make when it comes to your solar hot water system. These can be broken down into deciding what panel types you want, where you want the tank placed and what booster type you want.
Solar Hot Water Panel Types
Solar hot water panels can be broken up into flat panel collectors and evacuated tube solar hot water systems each of these systems has its benefits and implementations.
- Flat Panel Collectors: flat panels are most likely what comes to mind when you think of a solar hot water system. These panels are made up of a heat-absorbent backplate and a series of tubes running from the bottom to the top of the plate through which the water is pumped. These panels are far cheaper than evacuated tubes however they are less effective in the cold than evacuated tubes.
- Evacuated Tubes: are more expensive than flat panels however they do pack a punch when it comes to efficiency. Evacuated tubes use a series of heat-absorbent pipes encased in a vacuum tube that greatly reduces the heat loss from the system this makes them far more efficient than flat panels in low light and colder climates.
Hot Water Storage Types
Hot water storage is broken into two types split or pump and close-coupled or thermosiphon systems.
- Split System: or pump hot water systems split the panels and the storage tank these systems use a small amount of electricity to pump water up through the panel and then down into the tank. these systems can work with either type of panel and are perfect for older roofs or roofs that can't hold the weight of the tank as a full tank can weigh up to half a tonne. Another upside of the split system is you can get a larger storage tank and the system is able to be placed out of the elements either under the eaves or inside your home.
- Close Coupled System: these systems are more complicated in how they work but less complicated in installation and operation. A thermosiphon system moves the tank onto the roof positioned at the top of the panel. Instead of using a pump to circulate water a thermosiphon system uses a thermal convection current to pull cold water from the bottom of the panel to the top and into the storage tank. This means that on a sunny day, the system will cost you nothing to run.

Hot Water Booster Types
Hot water boosters are used to offset the solar system on overcast days or when the solar system can't keep up with usage such as back-to-back long showers. These boosters are broken into two types gas and electric hot water boosters.
- Gas Boosted Solar Hot Water: gas-boosted hot water uses a gas burner to heat up the water in the storage tank when the solar panel is unable to. Gas boosters are more energy efficient than electric but do require a connection to either mains natural gas or LPG tank gas.
- Electric Boosted Solar Hot Water: works much the same as a gas-boosted system in that an electric element is used to heat the water when it drops below its set point.
